Pesky Communications

For those who do not know, communication is a BIG issue in the North.  It took me over 8 hours to upload a 35 mb file onto an FTP site.  With constant communication problems, it is a wonder businesses function up here.  Cell phones drop calls and we see it as normal.  Mind you, it is nice to be able to ignore an incoming call from someone and they think it may be the network, knowing the area.  What is a joke is the data packages on cell phones.  I was once looking for a recipe on the phone while at the grocery store so I could get the right ingredients.  It took over 15 minutes to load.  Bell has promised 4G up here for a while, but nothing yet.  The real problem with the internet is that it all goes through the satellite dishes, hopefully they finally connect to the fibre optic cables running along the ocean floor. One day it will happen... We can all dream...  

Sunny Day in Iqaluit

It is a beautiful day in Iqaluit.  I took this photo out my window.  It is zero degrees celsius and very bright.  My friends living in southern Canada should know that in the North, this is short sleeve season.  The bay is thawing, but snowmobilers are still using it.  The sun sets at 9:07 PM.  It is almost the summer solstice (June 21) with about 24 hr daylight.   Imagine daylight at 2 AM.  Today, people are active on the streets. It feels as though the city has woken up from hibernation.  This is a perfect day for a drive.  I think we will do that. Enough computer stuff... off to the sunshine...

Warren's Inuksuk

This is an image of an Inuksuk I made on the top of Mount Pelly in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.  Taken in 2013.  The trip was amazing having a chance to see some snow owls and muskox.  The climb up the mountain was not expert, but was worth it to look over the tundra.

First Entry

Hello all,

This is my first time writing about my experiences on a blog.  I am Canadian of Maltese background.  I grew up in southern Ontario.  My life goals have been about becoming an architect and helping to change the lives of those living in slum areas.  Over my education I have met some amazing people.  In 2010, my wife and I moved to Iqaluit, Nunavut.  Presently I have just completed my Masters of Architecture. Starting today I will be sharing these experiences online.  I hope that my life will encourage others to always chase their dreams and at all times find ways to make the world a better place.
